If you notice a sharp smell coming from your Sterra Paws that reminds you of burnt charcoal, hot metal, or an electrical scent, don't worry. This is frequently a normal characteristic of a brand-new carbon filter settling in.
Why Does My New Filter Smell?
Most high-efficiency air purifier filters contain an activated carbon layer to trap odors and chemicals.
High-Temperature Manufacturing: Activated carbon is created through a high-temperature carbonization process. This process can naturally leave behind a slight "smoky," "gunpowder," or "burnt charcoal" scent.
Sealed Packaging: Because filters are tightly sealed in plastic during shipping to preserve freshness, these natural carbon odors become concentrated. The smell is often most noticeable right after unsealing and during the first few weeks of use.
It Is Completely Safe: The filter contains no electrical components, so a smell from the filter is not a fire or burning hazard. The scent will naturally dissipate as air flows through it over time.
2-Minute Filter Separation Test
To confirm whether the scent is coming from the natural carbon filter or the machine itself, follow these simple steps:
Step 1: Direct Filter Sniff Test
Turn off and completely unplug your Sterra Paws.
Turn the machine upside down, open the base cover, and pull out the filter cartridge.
Smell the filter directly.
Does the filter smell like fresh charcoal, gunpowder, or slightly burnt carbon?
If yes, this is completely normal! There is no need to replace the filter. Re-insert it and continue using it normally, the scent will fade with regular use.
Step 2: Machine Component Test
If the smell is sharp, metallic, or smells like hot electrical wiring, test the unit without the filter:
Keep the filter out of the machine.
Look inside the empty filter chamber and locate the small plastic safety sensor clip near the rim (this detects when a filter is inserted).
Plug the machine in, then press and hold the sensor clip with your finger to bypass the safety check.
Turn the machine on for 30 seconds while holding the clip, and smell the air output coming from the top.
What Your Results Mean
NO smell without the filter: Your machine's motor and wiring are 100% healthy. The odor is purely from the active charcoal material and will fade soon. You can safely reinstall the filter and continue normal use.
Metallic or burning smell STILL PRESENT without the filter: Turn off and unplug the unit immediately. The issue is related to internal wiring or the control board.
