Sterra Nova — Unpleasant SmellUpdated 5 hours ago
If your Sterra Nova is emitting a strange smell, don't worry, this is usually a common maintenance or break-in characteristic, not a broken machine. The solution depends entirely on whether your unit is brand new or has been running for a while.
1. Is Your Sterra Nova Brand New? (New Plastic Smell)
What it is: It is completely normal for a brand-new air purifier to emit a mild plastic or "new appliance" smell when first turned on. This is caused by the fresh components warming up for the first time.
The Fix: Run the Sterra Nova on its highest fan speed setting in a well-ventilated room for 24 to 48 hours. The smell is completely harmless and will naturally dissipate within a week of regular use.
2. Is Your Unit Older? (Sour, Musty, or Stale Smell)
Because the True HEPA filter acts like a giant particle sponge, it traps odor molecules from your home. Over time, or if exposed to high humidity, the filter can become saturated and begin blowing odors back into the room.
Check for Hidden Plastic: Ensure you took off the clear plastic protective shipping wrap from around the filter inside the base. If left on, it will quickly cause a stale smell.
Inspect the Pre-Filter: Turn off the unit, pull out the filter, and check the outer grey layer. If it is caked in pet fur, dust, or hair, gently vacuum it off with a brush attachment or wipe it down with a completely dry cloth.
Never Wash the Filter: Do not expose the filter to water, liquids, or damp cloths. Introducing moisture into a carbon/HEPA filter will cause mold and bacteria to breed, creating a permanent sour, wet-dog smell.
3. Clear the Machine's Internal Airway
Sometimes, environmental dust settles inside the actual fan blades or inner chassis.
Unplug the unit.
Use a slightly damp microfibre cloth to clean the external plastic body and the top grilles.
Let the unit sit open to air out for 2 hours before plugging it back in.
Still Smelling Bad?
If your filter is older than 6 months, or if it has absorbed heavy cooking grease, smoke, or pet odors, it has simply reached its capacity. The best way to get that fresh, crisp air back is to install a genuine Sterra Nova replacement filter.
