Sterra Mars — Unpleasant SmellUpdated 17 hours ago

If you notice an unusual or unpleasant odor coming from your Sterra Mars when you turn it on, please be completely reassured. This does not mean the internal air purification motor is failing or that your device is releasing harmful emissions into your room!

This symptom is typically tied to a temporary New-Component Outgassing or a Filtration Core Saturation. When your air purifier is brand new, the freshly molded internal plastic housing and the protective materials used during manufacturing can release a faint, distinct "new appliance" plastic smell under the heat of first-time operation. On the other hand, if you have been using your purifier for months, the medical-grade HEPA filter acts like a giant sponge—trapping airborne pet odors, cooking oils, dampness, and organic micro-particles. Over time, these trapped particles accumulate and break down inside the dense fiber matrix, causing the exhaust air to take on a musty or stale smell.

You can easily isolate the cause, refresh the filtration matrix, and restore a completely crisp, clean scent to your home by following this systematic maintenance sequence:

The Odor Extraction & Filter Refresh Sequence

Please turn off the power and unplug the unit from the wall before inspecting the filter:

1.Manage the First-Time 'New Unit' Outgassing

If your Sterra Mars is straight out of the box, a mild plastic odor is entirely normal and expected during initial use.

To clear it quickly, place the purifier in an open, well-ventilated room or near an open window, set the fan speed to High Mode, and let it run continuously for a few days. The rushing air column will rapidly dissipate the factory-new scent, and the odor will vanish completely within 1 to 2 weeks of routine operation.

2.Inspect and Clear the Filter Intake Surface

If you have been operating your unit for an extended period, open the main filter compartment door and slide out the cylindrical filtration core.

Examine the outer mesh layer. Use a soft brush or the upholstery attachment of a standard vacuum cleaner to gently sweep away accumulated lint, hair, and thick dust mats. Important: Never wash the carbon or HEPA layers of the Sterra Mars filter with water, as moisture will permanently lock up the odor-absorbing pores.

3.Install a Fresh Replacement Filter Matrix

If the musty or sour smell stubbornly persists even after vacuuming the surface, the internal activated carbon layers have reached their chemical saturation limit and can no longer trap odors.

Unwrap a brand-new, genuine Sterra Mars replacement filter from its plastic protective wrapping, slide it firmly into the inner tracking chamber, and close the panel. This instantly eliminates the old odor reservoir and restores a completely fresh air stream.

What to Do If an Unpleasant Smell Persists

For 98% of users, letting a new machine outgas for a few days or dropping in a fresh replacement filter will instantly clear any odors and restore premium, clean air delivery.

However, if you have installed a brand-new filter, but the machine stubbornly continues to blast a strong chemical, sour, or abnormal odor into the room after 48 hours of continuous operation, a rare factory material variance or an internal localized component issue may be present.

Please log into our Customer Support portal to hand over your file directly to a live technical specialist:

1.Record a Continuous 1-Minute Verification Video

Place your Sterra Mars on a flat surface in a clear space. Record a continuous video of at least 1 minute capturing your machine.

Start the video by sliding out your filter on camera to show that it is either clean or brand-new. Reassemble the unit, turn it on, and let the camera run continuously for a full minute while filming the exhaust grille.

2.Submit Your Direct Support Request

Log into your account portal, attach your 1-minute video, and copy-and-paste the following message directly to our live agents:

  1. Log in to our Customer Support Portal.

  2. Submit a support ticket describing the issue.

  3. Attach a short video (at least 1 minute long) showing the error happening. This will help our technical team diagnose and resolve the issue much faster for you.

📌 Support Message Template: "An unpleasant smell is coming from my Sterra Mars. I have followed the Help Center guide to verify the filter condition and address potential new-unit outgassing, but the persistent odor continues to push through the exhaust grille. I have attached the required 1-minute troubleshooting video demonstrating my clean filter setup for immediate review and file handover to a live agent."
