Sterra Y — Horn or Humming Sound — Airlock IssueUpdated a day ago
If your Sterra Y water purifier is making an unusual humming, vibrating, or deep foghorn-like sound, there is no need to worry. This noise is caused by a simple airlock—a pocket of trapped air squeezed tightly inside your filter connections.
When water tries to bypass this compressed air pocket, it causes the internal valves to vibrate rapidly, creating that loud hum. You can quickly release this trapped air and silence the machine by following our step-by-step structural reset guide below.

Step-by-Step Airlock Release Protocol
1.1. Shut off the water supply completely: Stops incoming pressure.
Locate the small blue shut-off valve along the water tube behind or near your Sterra Y and turn it perpendicular to the line to close it.
(Note: If your installation line does not have a blue valve, simply turn the main metal water valve under your kitchen sink completely off).
2.2. De-energize the machine: Cuts system power.
Reach behind the unit and toggle the main power switch to OFF ( O ), then pull the power cord cleanly out of the electrical wall outlet. Ensure both water and power are entirely disconnected before moving forward.
3.3. Remove and release the filters: Vents the airlock.
Open your side or front filter door panel. Grab the first filter firmly, twist it to the left (counter-clockwise), and pull down to remove it from its filter head slot. Repeat this for all remaining filters. You may hear a soft hiss of air escaping—this means the airlock is breaking.
4.4. Reinsert and lock the filters: Secures the seal.
Push each filter firmly back straight up into its matching filter head socket. Twist it to the right (clockwise) until it stops completely and locks securely into its vertical position.
5.5. Restore power and water lines: Restores fluid loop.
Plug the power cord back into the wall and turn the machine switch ON. Next, slowly open your blue water valve (or under-sink valve) fully. Run a brief 10-second water dispense to flush the line. The humming or horn sound should now be completely gone!
Still hearing a loud hum or vibration?
If you have completed the filter reseat process twice but the machine continues to make a loud mechanical horn sound, the issue might be an internal electronic water-pump fault or a failed primary pressure regulator switch.
