If you notice a distinct metallic, smoky, or gunpowder-like scent coming from your Sterra Moon upon unboxing or after installing a fresh filter, please be completely reassured. This does not automatically mean your air purifier is breaking down or that an electrical hazard is present in your home!
This symptom is usually caused by an Activated Carbon Micro-Vapor Release. The high-performance, medical-grade filter inside your Sterra Moon contains a dense layer of pure activated carbon granules, which are baked and highly compressed at extreme temperatures during manufacturing. When these filters are tightly sealed in airless plastic packaging for transport, the charcoal granules can release a concentrated, completely harmless gas pocket that smells heavily metallic or like gunpowder upon unboxing.

Please turn off the power and unplug the unit from the wall outlet before opening the filter compartment:
1.Perform a Direct Scent Test on the Filter
Open the lower compartment panel of your Sterra Moon and slide the filter completely out of the machine.
Bring the unwrapped filter into a different room and smell the pleated surface directly. If you detect that distinct gunpowder, charcoal, or metallic smell on the filter body itself, this is completely normal new-filter behavior. The scent will naturally neutralize and completely vanish within a few days of routine exposure to open air.
2.Run the Air Purifier Empty to Isolate the Motor
Leave the filter sitting in the other room. Walk back to your empty Sterra Moon chassis, plug it back into the wall outlet, and turn it on to run temporarily without any filter inside.
Let the fan run on high for 3 to 5 minutes while checking the empty exhaust stream:
Scenario A (Clean Exhaust Air): If the air coming out of the empty unit smells completely normal, your motor wiring is perfectly intact! Go to Step 3.
Scenario B (Smoky/Acrid Exhaust Air): If the empty unit itself is pushing out a sharp, plastic-burning, or electrical-acrid smell, turn it off immediately. Skip directly to the support section below.
3.Flush the New Filter Cache in an Open Space
If the test confirms the smell is strictly coming from the filter, slide the filter back inside the machine and lock the cover.
Place the purifier in an open, well-ventilated room or near a cracked window, select High Mode, and let it run continuously for 48 hours. The high-velocity airflow will flush out the trapped carbon vapors, leaving your home's air completely crisp and odorless.
What to Do If the Burning Smell Comes Directly from the Unit
If your isolation test in Step 2 confirms that the burning scent is blasting directly out of the empty Sterra Moon chassis even when the filter is completely removed, an internal electronic wiring fault or component variance may be present.

1.Record a Continuous 1-Minute Verification Video
Place your empty Sterra Moon near its outlet. Record a continuous video of at least 1 minute capturing your setup.
Start the video by showing that the filter is completely removed and sitting on the floor next to the machine. Then, plug the empty purifier in, turn it on, and hold your phone's microphone close to the top air exhaust grille for a full continuous minute to document the running state of the motor.
